The Department of Antiquities and Museums in Ras Al Khaimah was established by Emiri Decree No. 6 of 1987 under the sublime patronage of the late Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, may Allah rest his soul in peace, the Ruler of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah at that time.

Since its establishment, the Department has undertaken several tasks, such as conducting archaeological surveys and excavations in cooperation with archaeological excavation missions, preserving and maintaining ancient archaeological sites, preserving antiquities and displaying them to public in the National Museum, as well as to carrying out and documenting archaeological studies and research, introducing the civilization of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and its very ancient past to the different segments and groups of society through holding exhibitions, heritage events, seminars and historical lectures.

After H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and under the directives of His Highness, the organizational structure of the Department of Antiquities and Museums was developed to add some departments and specialized unites. Furthermore, the organizational frameworks of the Department have also been developed. Its vision, mission, goals and values have also been formulated to be linked and in line with the government’s strategy.

Through the work entrusted to it, the Department receives delegations and research teams that will increase historical knowledge of the emirate. Also the research and excavate the ancient antiquities in a large and diverse number of archaeological sites that are subject to protection by the government of Ras Al Khaimah. The Department also welcomes the communication of institutions, universities and community members to contribute to increasing Knowledge and awareness of the ancient heritage of our Emirate through different channels.
